Perfect for Fall!

So I know Fall technically doesn't start for a few more days, but I couldn't wait. I am in love with this colour for fall! It's such a neat greyish-brown shade, and it also has some shimmer in it which makes it even more gorgeous!

With Fall comes the need to say goodbye to super bright, summery colours. I really recommend investing in a colour like this for Fall; neutral tones are in this season, and something like this is simple and stunning. Check it out!

Don't Judge a Polish Its Bottle

When I first saw this in the store, I thought it was some kind of lipgloss. Turns out its actually Revlon's new nail polish, and it is one of the coolest polishes I've seen in a while!

How it works; you take the darker coat and paint it on your nails. Then you just paint the sparkle side over it!

I was a bit skeptical because the sparkles looked really flashy and I wasn't too sure about the colour. But once it's actually on the nails, it blends in with the darker colour and takes on this really neat, almost tie dye-like form. The only down side to this polish? It's expensive and the sparkles get used up REALLY fast; I've only used it twice and the sparkle side is half empty. But what can ya do.

Here's what it looked like on my nails. This is called Revlon's "Nail Art Moon Candy" in "Galactic"!

Gorgeous Purple!

I recently took a trip to the States, and I got this colour super cheap! As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it.

It's a pretty dark purple tint, but it has a really unique orangey-copper undertone to it. It's so gorgeous, it's one of my new favorites! Here I paired it with a gold sparkle accent nail just to make it pop even more. What do you think, awesome right!? :)

Ps, the colour is Zoya's "Lotus".

Pink or Purple?

So I can't decide if this is colour is pink or purple, but it is gorgeous!! I have been in love with really bright shades this summer, and I think this one gets the award for brightest polish. It is perfect for summer. It's a feel good colour :)

China Glaze calls it purple ("Purple Panic Neon"), but I think it looks more pink when it's on. You should try it, it's a fun one!

The Goal of DIY Nails Blog

Good afternoon! Now that I'm starting to get a few followers and have a few more posts up, I just wanted to emphasize what exactly this blog is about.

I did NOT create this blog to brag about the hundreds of polishes I have, and all the fabulous and complicated designs I can do with my nails. Don't get me wrong, I love looking at blogs like that and I commend anyone who can do those!  However, I've noticed that something important is missing from the blog world; practicality and simplicity, especially when it comes to nail designs! I realize that not everyone has the money to go out and spend $10 to $20 on every nail polish bottle they buy, and then buy 10 or 15 at a time. It's just not practical! So many nail polish blogs have hundreds of colours in their arsenal of polish, and I am more than jealous of them! But like many other people, I can't spend that much money on polish, and I don't have the time to do a different complicated design and then blog about it everyday.

Like those other blogs, I do have a passion for great nails. But the main focus of this blog is on practicality. I want my posts to be something EVERYONE can do, not just a select few. The focus of DIY Nails is just that; something you can do yourself at home! I want to share tips that I have learned that makes doing your nails easier, and gets you better results at home. I want beginners to be able to relate as well as those who are more skilled at nail design. I want this to be a place where everyone can get useful tips, and get cool ideas on how to do their nails.

I want this blog to show everyone that you don't need to spend a lot of money to get great nails! You can still look fabulous using what you have at home :) Nail design meets practicality!

Sparkle Tips

This is one of the easiest manicures you can do at home. It's super fast to do (the glitter polish is very fast-drying), and it only takes two coats of glitter polish to get this look!

The polish I used here is O.P.I.'s "Crown Me Already", and it worked really well! This polish is a really heavy glitter, and when I first bought it I wasn't sure exactly how to use it to its best advantage. But I feel like I really found the perfect use for it in this look!

To get this look, I did one base coat, and then covered that with a translucent nude polish. When that was dry, I covered 3/4 of my nails with the glitter polish, trying to avoid the bigger chunks of glitter. I think it looks better with only the very small sparkles on this layer. I then did a second layer of the glitter polish on the tops of my nails. Then a top coat of course to smooth over the sparkles, an this is what I got!

Try this today, it's super easy and it really does look great!

I'm In Love!

I decided to try this colour on a whim, and I'm so glad I did! It is one of my new favorites! It's "Iceberg Lotus" by Nicole by O.P.I. It's a shimmery bluish green colour, and it is a very sparkly mix. I love it because it has the perfect amount of shine and shimmer!

To get this look, I applied a base coat, three layers of the polish, and of course a top coat. It's one of those colours that looks great in the summer and winter! Try it today, it's a fun one :)

Perfect Summer Pink!

Zoya's "Bijou". It's alot brighter than how it looks in the picture. It's like a light hot pink, and it is one of my all time favorites! You have to use a few coats, but the end result is pretty, kinda translucent, shimmery pink nails!

Try this colour for fun, bright, and sparkly summer nails!

And The Award For Most Unique Goes To...

"Rockstar Pink" by Sally Hansen! This polish is great because it's super affordable, so it's great for those on a budget, and it creates unique, sparkly, and eye-catching nails!

To get the same look I've done in the picture, just apply a base coat, two coats, and your top coat! This polish dries super fast too, so this is one f the quickest manicures you can give yourself. My only complaint about this polish is that it chips easily. But it's easy to do touch ups, so it's not that big of a deal. Try this one today, it's a fun one :)

Or another idea for this polish; apply a fading coat onto one of the colours that are in the sparkles! check out the picture!

Two is Better Than One!

Trends for this summer are fun, bright, detailed, funky nails! These nails follow the trends, and the best part? They're super easy to do!

You could do this style using any two colours, but I like it best with lighter and slightly darker shades of the same colour. This will create a subtle, but interesting look that will make both colours pop!

Start with your lighter colour (just in case your first line isn't the straightest, you can cover it up with the darker colour), and carefully brush a straight line from the bottom of your nail to the top, cutting your nail into halves. Fill in the rest of that half with the same colour. Wait for It to dry, then do the other. Don't forget your base and top coats!

TIP: choose a polish that doesn't require more than one coat, just to avoid mess-ups. Here, I used Essie polish for both colours, and it worked really well! This is one of my favorite summer looks, it is very fun and funky!

Ps, pardon the messy cuticles :)

When In Doubt, Add Some Sparkle!

No matter how much you love your polish colours, they get boring after a while. The easiest way to dress up an old look is to add some sparkles to it! This is super easy, and really looks great!

As you can see, here are pictures of ways I've done this. The gold sparkles are Nicole by O.P.I.'s "Twist of Fate" paired with Essie's "Cute as a Button" (pink) and Revlon's "Siren" (orange).

When I add sparkles, I like to do a fade; heavy sparkle at the top, fading down to cover about 3/4 of the nail. The trick is to do layers of sparkles, so you don't put huge globs of polish on at once. I've used two layers in each picture, and it turned out really well. A look I LOVE is with the orange nails. A popular nail trend right now is to do something different on the ring finger nail to make it pop, and the extra sparkles added to it really takes this colour from great to gorgeous!

Don't be afraid to play around with different colours of sparkles and polishes! I really recommend doing this with a darker blue or purple polish and pair it with silver sparkles, it looks amazing! Try this look today, I can guarantee that you will love it:)

Make Nude Polish Exciting!

Nude polish always looks nice on your nails, but it can get boring. Looking for a way to spice up your nude colours? Look no farther... Just add some sparkle!

Here, I used a light brown nude (base coats underneath), then did a stripe of O.P.I.'s "Crown Me Already" on each nail. I was able to do this freehand, as this sparkle polish is very dense, and can easily be guided to where you want it. Another thing I like about this polish is that it can easily be touched up while it's still wet; just take a q-tip and touch up the lines for a flawless look! If you're using any other polish however, I'd recommend using another tool to help you draw the lines.

TIP: if you don't want to purchase any expensive nail tools to help you do this, an old liquid eyeliner brush works great for nail design! Just sterilize it and clean off any remaining liner, and it will work perfectly to help you draw on these lines!

This is a fun way to make your nude polish a little more interesting! Don't be afraid to play around with different colour nudes or sparkles, although I do recommend sticking to gold, silver, or more subtle sparkles to avoid a look that is too crazy. And don't forget your top coat!

Go Green or Go Home!

One of my favorite polish colours this spring is green. Earlier this year, the go-to green was a lighter, nude-ish minty colour. Now, the look has changed to more of a brighter, funky, in-your-face green. Im all about a bright, fun polish, and I recommend definitely purchasing your own fun green, and try this trend today!

My new favorite green polish is Misa's "The Grass is Greener". It's a fun, shimmery, and super bright shade. I like it because it's definitely unique, and it fits in with the spring/summer trend of bright, colourful nails! Enjoy :)

Gettin' Miss Piggy With It

This colour from O.P.I.'s Muppets collection (as well as the collection as a whole), got really bad reviews. The majority of buzz I've heard about this colour was negative. I can understand why some people wouldn't like it, as on its own the polish is not that flattering. However, when done on top of another colour, this polish is one of my favorites!

Here, I've paired it with Essie's "Fifth Avenue", a super bright red. To get this look, I did a base coat, one coat of "Fifth Avenue", two coats of Miss Piggy on top of that, and then a final top coat. I love this because it is truly a unique look! I have gotten more compliments while wearing this than any other style! And not just by friends, but I've had random people stop me in stores to tell me that they loved my nails! I call this look my Ruby Slipper Nails. They're so pretty, and I really feel like it is "Gettin' Miss Piggy With It" done right!

I would recommend doing something similar with the other colours from this collection. Pick a matching, but brighter shade as an undertone, then do two layers of the O.P.I. on top. Or you could try a contrasting colour as a base. I've seen black as the base colour, and it has looked stunning! Before hating on this colour, experiment with it a bit. Guaranteed you will love it :)

Invest in a good base coat/top coat

Most of these you can buy in a 2-in-1 base and top coat, and I would recommend purchasing this if you dont already have it.

The best advice that anyone can give you when it comes to painting your nails:

Don't forget the base coat!!

If you have the time, apply two base coats before you do a coat of colour.

Why? When you add this extra base layer, it smooths out any bumps or imperfections in your nail, and makes the end result look much more smooth and polished than it would look without the base coat. It also adds a much more professional look, instead of the average, obviously done-at-home nail.

Once you've done the base and colour coats, it also helps to add a top coat. An added top coat actually makes a significant difference in the amount of time your nails will last before the polish starts to chip, and it will add some extra shine that gives it a finished look.

The base and top coats are something that many people skip while doing their nails at home. I recommend definitely adding these steps to your nail routine to get the best possible results!

Not all polishes are going to look good..

Even though some may be more expensively priced, not all brands will look good on your nails. The consistency, shine, and thickness are all aspects that determine whether the polish will look good or AMAZING on your nails.

I've tried quite a few different brands, and I've found that some look much better than others. I like polishes that aren't too runny, as they require fewer coats and tend to look more professional on your nails. The more coats you apply, the sloppier your nails tend to look, and that's not the look you want to go for!

I was really excited about the brand Nichole by O.P.I. because the colours are so pretty and unique. I was disappointed after trying it though, because in order to get the polish to look like the colour its appears to be in the bottle, I had to apply three coats. It's just way too time consuming, and although the end result turned out to be quite pretty, it just required too much effort.

The brand that I would most recommend would be Essie. It's my favorite because it is affordable ($8 to $10 depending on where you shop), and you only need to use one coat to achieve desired results! It goes on very smoothly, and usually lasts quite a few days before it starts to chip. It also dries pretty fast, and comes off much more easily with polish remover than other brands. If you want professional looking nails fast, I would recommend this brand to you, it definitely delivers!

Here's one of my favorite Essie colours, Watermelon:

Love having awesome nails?

Me too. But I can't stand getting my nails done at a salon. Through trial and error, I've learned nifty tricks to get great nails at home that look like they've been done professionally! And the best part? It's super easy.

I'll be posting some tips to get great nails that are really helpful and have worked for me. Also, you'll get to see some cool designs that I love, and tutorials that make seemingly hard designs a piece of cake!

Keep checking back for more designs and fun nail ideas :) cheers!
